Upgrading your son to a tween boy bedroom

My oldest will be turning 10 in just a few weeks. Up until recently, our boys (2 years apart in age) have elected to share a bedroom. Last summer they decided they would each like to have their own room. As sad as it was so see this day come, it worked out fine as our guest bedroom is rarely used.

Even though we used the same bed, bedding, and nightstand we had in that room when it was our guest bedroom, we wanted our son to feel like the room was his. We purchased a desk and matching dresser as well as some wall art from Hobby Lobby. There was only one problem, however. The bed always looked like a disaster…even on the days that he “made” it. A down comforter (no matter how “neutral”) and 7 pillow shams aren’t ideal for a tween boy. I have been a huge fan of Beddy’s for all of my kids (evidence here and here), so I contacted them to see if I could get a queen size set in exchange for a review. They graciously agreed and now the bed looks just as good as it does in the photos every. single. day. And my son is happy because he loves the cozy chenille on the inside of the Beddy’s bedding!

Here are my top tips for upgrading your son’s to a tween boy bedroom:

:: Use what you have.

Look around the house for ways you can repurpose what you already have. In our case, we were able to use a bed that was already in that room, a chair used elsewhere in our house, and an old nightstand and lamp handed down to us.

:: Add a few inexpensive pieces that feature your child’s current interests.

I opted to buy some sports wall art from Hobby Lobby to put above our son’s bed. He also added a few NASA and Star Wars posters on the wall.

:: Limit the clutter.

Use baskets and closet organizers to limit the clutter in your child’s room. Tweens go through so many changes that it is important to keep their living space simple and clutter-free.

:: Keep bed-making simple.

Making the bed (almost) every day is an expectation for every member of our family. I love a pretty-looking bed…even when it is in my child’s room. But demanding a perfect-looking bed is not worth the battle in my house. Whether this means limiting the number of throw pillows or getting Beddy’s Zippered Bedding to make mornings even easier, find what works for you and your child. We are huge fans of Beddy’s because all your child has to do is zip up the sides of their bed and it looks perfect! No wrinkles or lumps! We chose to go with the Game Day bedding because it is masculine yet neutral and can grow with our son.

:: Be open to change.

Puberty is a time for many changes, not the least of which might include your child’s bedroom. Your little boy who always loved basketball might suddenly hate it if he doesn’t make the school’s basketball team. If your son wants to make a few simple changes every now and then to reflect his independence and developing interests, be flexible and understanding. Keep the more expensive parts of your child’s room neutral (bed, furniture, bedding, lamps) so that you can swap out the wall art and decorative items as he gets older.
